Well Cheese, i was going to sit and just watch this post go by until i saw the comment about there being so many Mercs out there and that was the reason there are so many problems because they out number everyone else 2 to 1. Say what you want about the Mercs but there is a serious problem when a motor manufacturer buys out every boat brand it can and makes the boat company put Mercs on and nothing else! If Mercury bought out every bassboat company there was i would be fishing out of a canoe! OH AND BUY THE WAY GO HUMMINBIRD!
I ran a Johnson and Evinrude for 12 to 13 years. With all the problems with the Etec and months of comparing Mercury was the best way to go when I re-powered the boat last year. Its pretty bad when you call a dealer about the Etec and he tells you he's had 100% engine failure on every Etec he's installed. Or try to trade in anything with a rude on it, the dealer won't touch it because of the bad rap Evinrude has. I guess when you re-power your canoe or buy another one you can try to explain your loyalty to Bombardier customer service, ask Basser 201 what loyalty got him. on the other hand if your gonna be a bank beater that canoe and Hummingbird unit is probably all you need for Durham Creek and the Goose Creek Reservoir. A lowrance unit would be way to complicated for you to figure out.

I am running an E-Tec with Lowrance electronics on it mainly because I got a special deal. Can't complain about either one.
However, I think you should buy American made products whenever you can. If that is the case with Hummingbird then that is what will go on my rig next.

Since this post just refuses to die, I have a question. Why is buying American such a big deal when it comes electronics, but there is no such discussion about fishing tackle? Did you know that only one reel is 100% made in the USA? ONE! That's Ardent Reels. Made in Macon, Missouri. I bought one and I love it. I bet all the people shouting "buy American" have a boat load of Shimano's!!!

Love to try the Ardents Bob cept' they don't make lefties and seem a bit heavy for the price. The Denny Brauer flippin reel weighs in at a whopping 13 ounces! I'd have to take illegal steroids to fish that thing....

Hate to disappoint you. Hummingbird units might be made in the USA, but most of the components in them come from across the big pond. I have a Lowrance HDS 10 & 8 they're great units and the side imaging is unbelievable. Most of the Pros I fish with wouldn't have any other than Lowrance. Every once in awhile you will have a design problem but Lowrance has worked hard to fix it which was minor if you look at all the units they have put out. Hummingbird has always been a low end unit produced for the weekend warrior.
